UNESCO and Fiji Strengthen Collaboration for the Protection and Sustainable Management of Levuka Historical Port Town

These discussions are particularly timely as the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, to be hosted by the Republic of Korea in Busan from 19 to 29 July 2026, will highlight the implementation of the World Heritage Programme for Small Island Developing States, with a renewed focus on climate resilience and the sustainable management of heritage sites facing increasing environmental pressures.

The mission reaffirmed the importance of a people-centred approach to heritage conservation that recognizes cultural heritage as a driver of community wellbeing, education, sustainable livelihoods and local economic development. Stakeholders also highlighted opportunities to strengthen connections between World Heritage conservation, living heritage, storytelling, creative industries and community-based tourism, ensuring that Levuka remains a vibrant and living heritage site for future generations.

As UNESCO continues to deepen its partnership with Fiji, the Organization remains committed to working closely with national authorities, local communities, traditional leaders and development partners to strengthen the protection and sustainable management of the country's cultural heritage.
